1. Musical structure of guitar starts with the general pattern of the notes of C Major scale on the guitar fretboard, "white piano keys":

Guitar Major Scale Pattern

Memorizing this simple pattern gives you an ability to play the C major scale in random order right away and it means making basic musical sense of the pool of sounds. Anyone can do it in an hour. To start with, memorize the general pattern, not the individual notes yet. The pattern repeats itself from the fret 12. Imagine a tape where frets 0 and 12 are glued like a ring. This pattern for major scales of all keys is the same. It is only shifted along this ring.

2. The pattern naturally is memorized across the strings. But it is easy to go along the strings and play the notes sequentially. There is no need to memorize individual string patterns, you already know a single pattern for them as the whole.
